In my encounters during personal and public evangelism, I have met with people, who try to justify themselves as to why they do not need salvation or a Saviour. They claim they do not drink nor smoke, they do not flirt around with the opposite sex and do not think evil of others. Therefore, they believe, there is no need to preach to them. These set of people are of the opinion they are good and therefore do not require anything else to make heaven.
But my dear reader,if you belong to this category of people, I want to tell you scripturally that it is a wrong notion. There is no doubt that there are very many people in different religious bodies who are good morally. Some do not even belong to any religious group and yet they are very morally upright. But still, moral uprightness, self-righteousness and personal goodness alone cannot be equated with salvation or be a ticket to go to heaven. You might be morally good and still not go to heaven if you do not obey the word of God. Let us consider an example from the Bible.
In Acts 10:1-5 we read of a man who was morally upright and good. Still, he was told to send for Peter, who will tell him what to do. In other words, he was instructed to take steps for his salvation in line with God’s word.
“1. There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment,
2 a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always.
3 About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, “CORNELIUS!”
4 And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, “What is it, lord?” So he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.
5 Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter.
6 He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. a He will tell you what you must do.”Also in Matt. 7:21, Jesus stated that not all who says Lord, Lord will enter heaven but those who do the will of God. The key words here is “doing the will of God”. Also, in Isaiah. 64:6, the Bible says our righteousness is like filthy rag in the sight of God.
Our self-righteousness, moral uprightness and goodness without salvation in Christ cannot take us to heaven. In John 3:16, the Bible says that for God so loved the word that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life.
Therefore, to be saved today in accordance with God’s word does not depend on our self-righteousness and personal morality. It depends on obeying God’s word by:
1. Hearing the word of God Rom.10:17
2. Believing the word of Good. John 8:24
3. Repenting of past sins Luke 13:3;5
4. Confessing faith in Christ. Matt.10:32-33
5. Being baptized into Christ by immersion Mk.16:16
6. Worship God faithfully till the end Rev.2:10
Will All good People go to Heaven? The answer is both YES and NO. Good people will go to heaven if they obey God’s word. Otherwise good people will not go to heaven if they feel that all they need to go to heaven is only their personal moral standing and self-righteousness alone without obedience to God’s word Isaiah 64:6.
Note also that for us to be saved today, we must obey God, not man, not even the SINNERS’ prayer or altar call can grant us salvation.
You are cordially invited to visit the Church of Christ nearest to you for more on this and more of God’s unadulterated word. God bless you.
